The South African Recovery Film Festival 2015
24 – 27 September
The Labia Theatre, Orange Street, Cape Town
The Bioscope Independent Cinema, Johannesburg
Now in it’s 3rd year The Cape Town Recovery Film Festival is “re-branding” as The South African Recovery Film Festival (SARFF). As well as announcing our exciting partnership with SACAP (The South African College Of Applied Psychology) we also thank and welcome our supporting sponsors, The Prospect Hill Recovery Practice, Life Matters Outpatient, The Foundation Clinic in association with SHARP-Johannesburg and Ixande. This year we are also delighted about the involvement of the Step Up Project and Run 2016.
Focusing on documentary films that explore themes of addiction and mental health issues, SARFF aims to educate, entertain and inform – and to promote the solutions and successes of Recovery from these debilitating conditions.
The stigma that surrounds addiction, alcoholism and mental health issues often drives shame and ignorance of the conditions and not only makes access to help difficult, but provides no space to celebrate the solutions.
The effects of alcoholism, drug addiction and mental health issues effect all communities in South Africa increasing crime and violence, fueling neglect of families, negative impacts on work and study and much more. However, the positive impact of Recovery, fall in crime and violence, rebuilding families, ability to work – those in Recovery becoming active members of communities, role models and credible messengers of hope – needs to be celebrated.
A thriving Recovery Movement in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia has encouraged the organisers to continue to grow the Festival this year and to welcome the involvement of home grown recovery initiatives Recovery Ally Cape Town, Sober & Sexy and The Cape Town Recovery
SARFF hopes to stimulate a conversation about the realities of the problem, and to celebrate the positive effects of Recovery – of solutions – to challenge the stigma which is blocking the chances for so many.
